Note from Cynthia Harn, former Swim Team Manager
Thank you team so much for a wonderful time! I've truly enjoyed serving as Volunteer Swim Team Manager and have grown to just love your kids over the last three years. It's been loads of fun, but as I explained at the beginning of the 2009 season, I would not be returning as manager in 2010. So be sure to start planning for the season! I think you are the BEST Swim Team in Dallas and certainly the BEST VOLUNTEERS in the city with the coolest kids! You make me smile!
Wet hugs to you all!
Cynthia Harn
SWIM TEAM MANAGER NEEDED - POSITION COMPENSATED
Please contact the board if you are interested in the swim team manager position or in sharing it with another member. The board has agreed to compensate the team manager.
BENT TREE WEST - THE WAVE Swim Team General Information
Join the WAVES Swim Team! Eligible swimmers are ages 5-17, Full Members of the Bent Tree West Swim and Tennis Club, and are capable of swimming the length of our pool without assistance. As a member of the WAVE youth swim team, each swimmer learns all strokes, starts, and finishes in both individual events and relay teams. The WAVE competes in DASA (Dallas Amateur Swim Association), consisting of 35 teams and clubs in the Dallas, Plano and Carrollton areas. The DASA league is a fun way for young swimmers to be introduced to the wonderful world of competitive swimming.
If you miss the registration party each year, D&J Sports, 972/732-7946 supplies our swimsuits. They are located on Preston at Summerside, near La Hacienda restaurant.
The team has fun annual activities like the TEAM BASH to introduce and register families for the team each Spring. Swim Team parties include Splash Day at Hawaiian Falls and the Spaghetti Dinner Fund Raiser to raise funds for team equipment plus other team events.
Pictured at right is part of the gang in our cabana at Hawaiian Falls in 2009. The park looked so much fun with so many kids in blue BTW swimsuits everywhere!

Concessions & Fund Raising: Thank you to all the parents that work in all areas including concessions for our meets! The concessions funds we raise go to operating the swim team only. This keeps the swim team registration fees low and helps raise funds to buy supplies. In addition, we host an annual Spaghetti Dinner to raise funds for big ticket items --- like the new starting blocks from 2007 funds, new lane lines in 2008, and a cover for the lane lines in 2009.
Volunteer Coordinator: Needed to set up the master spreadsheet of who is volunteering for each meet based on your registration forms and to follow up to recruit for each meet.
Other Volunteer Opportunities: Please contact the Board if you have any questions about the volunteer opportunities for Swim Meets. Each family with a child swimming in a meet must have a parent or caregiver volunteer for at least one shift during the meet. If you are a working parent, we have volunteer positions where you can help, or you can work second shift! THANK YOU for your help!
Volunteer Swim Team Manager Needed for 2010: We need a Volunteer Swim Team Manager to replace Cynthia Harn for 2010! Planning for the season starts in the Winter.
2010 Swim Team & Meet Schedule
This year, the meet calendar is not set because all DASA Coaches have elected to meet May 26 to confirm their team schedules. The dates will be posted as soon as they are available. Meets are usually on Monday afternoons around 3 or 4PM. The WAVES swim in 4 - 5 meets at our pool or at others NW community pools. These meets are in addition to Champs & All Stars.

The Swim Team operations and coaches are managed by the VOLUNTEER Swim Team Manager. The team is coached by a trained Head Coach and Assistants. Coaches are paid from the swim team registration funds. The WAVES Swim Team is fully self supporting and is not funded by BTW Swim & Tennis Club membership fees.
Swim Stroke Technique Instructions
One of the benefits of joining the swim team are additional swim stroke refinement classes taught by our Assistant Coaches. These clinics are ONLY for Swim Team Members after Morning Practices. Sessions are 30 minutes and are $5 per student per day. There are usually about 3 students per coach. These arrangements are made directly with the coach. Fees are payable in advance to the coaches and fees are forfeited for no shows.
Classes are 11 - 11:30 AM and 11:30 - noon. Tuesday through Friday. Strokes to be determined by coaches and particular team members that day but the coach will concentrate on the same stroke with all 3 students.
Please contact the Assistant Coaches to schedule your sessions:
Meet Our Head Coach, Kara Schectman!
Meet Kara Brock Schectman Head Coach of THE WAVE Swim Team! Kara is Assistant Coach of the Plano West Swim Team and an English Teacher at the Senior High School. Kara said that she has enjoyed contributing to the success of the team and most importantly seeing each swimmer succeed at their personal goals.
She brings a unique history with her to BTW. She was Assistant Swim Coach to her own local Swim Team at Cypresswood in Spring, TX. Coach Schectman said our team feels similar to her own local neighborhood team although they had 200 swimmers and only two coaches! While assistant coach for over three years, she assisted all age groups in developing their swimming ability and technique. Kara coordinated practices for multiple age groups and ability levels. She also supervised practices and competitions for the team. Prior to coaching, Kara competed as a member of the team. Like BTW, Cypresswood won a number of Divisional Championships.

Kara is a 2001 graduate of Klein Oak High School in Spring-Klein, Texas, where she swam four years on the Varsity team. While at Klein Oak, Kara was named a three-time All American, two-time All State, and was recognized in Who's Who in Sports. Upon graduation, Kara accepted a four year scholarship to The University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. At UNT Kara specialized in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke and 200 and 400 Individual Medley as well as Relays. She was a four year Sun Belt Conference Finalist and four-year letter winner. Her senior year she was named Team co-captain. Kara also served as News Director for the UNT radio station, KNTU, and could be seen regularly as a weather anchor, reporter, and producer on the UNT television station NTTV. Kara graduated in 2005 with her Bachelors degree in Journalism and Political Science.
Kara is married to her college sweetheart 102.1 Edge DJ Mark Schectman. Kara and Mark met at UNT while working at KNTU. They spend their spare time with friends and family, traveling, going to concerts, and cheering for the MAVERICKS.
Assistant Coaches:
The 2009 Wave assistant coaches are former WAVE swimmers and have served BTW as lifeguards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to be a member of BTW S&T for my child to swim on The Waves Swim Team?
Yes, we are part of the Dallas Amateur Swimming Association (DASA). League rules require full club membership in order to participate.
All of my childs friends are in a different age group. Can he/she swim with that group?
Age groups are determined by birth date. June 1 is the cut-off date, as determined by DASA. By league rule, swimmers may move up with no penalty, but they may not move down. Approval to move up or down for workouts must be received in advance by Coach Kara. Should approval to move down an age group in practice be granted, it will be a conditional one with the understanding that the swimmer in question will swim at meets in the proper age group relays and individual events.
What is the practice cancellation policy in case of rain?
We will hold all practices if at all possible. If there is no lightning, there is a good chance that we will practice on rainy days. Should practice be cancelled, you will receive an email as soon as the decision is made, notifying you of the change. If you do not receive an email, assume that there is practice.
Does my child have to participate in Swim Meets?
The meets are strongly encouraged as they are an important part of The Wave team swimming. All swimmers must participate in at least two dual meets to be eligible to swim in the Divisionals meet.
If my swimmer misses a week of practice due to vacation, camp, VBS, etc., can they still participate in the next meet?
Absolutely! We are very aware that conflicts will arise; however, you must communicate all meet absences with your coaches well in advance so that relays can be planned for meet day.
How do we determine what my child will swim in meets?
We will continue the practice of our swimmer's choosing events preferred prior to the meet. The selection must be made in writing and placed in the box at the lifeguard table PRIOR to the meet. The exact day will be set by Coach Kara. This is scheduled PRIOR to the meet for relays to be planned in addition to individual events. The Coach will make the final decision on what your child will swim as the overall team's best interests must be considered.
What is the difference between Divisionals and All Stars?
Divisionals is the city-wide meet which determines the overall team champion. Swimmers must qualify for All Stars based on their times at Divisionals. Individual medals are given to the top swimmers at All Stars. In other words, Divisionals is a team event; All-Stars is an individual event.
END OF SEASON PARTY
Parents that didn't make it to the end of season party may pick up their trophies at the club. Coach Kara draped the Champs & All Stars ribbons around the trophies. Ribbons left over from other meets are in the ribbons file box. Please be sure to pick them all up as we clean out the shed and the box after every season!
WAVES ANNUAL SPAGHETTI DINNER 2009
August 8,2009 - Our annual fund raiser was a blast! Elizabeth Fernandez calculated the results and we raised over $500! Oliver's Eatery was very kind to host! More pics are in the photo gallery.
2009 BTW Waves Swim Team - only part of the team could make it! We have over 83 swimmers but only 50 were able to make it to the team photo! Individual and Sibling photographs are shot each year by Dave Stock Photography.
2008 BTW Waves Swim Team - about 60% of team represented in pic.
2007 BTW Waves Swim Team - about 60% of team in photograph.
